Site Policies

1) Accessibility

East Jersey Bound aims to provide seamless, accessible, and unhindered use for all visitors, including those with disabilities. I seek to improve user experience for everyone and apply relevant accessibility standards wherever possible.

I am guided by the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) which define requirements for designers and developers. Some content does not yet fully meet these standards but I am working on this.

If you have impaired sight, you can use the Ally plugin from Elementor to adjust site settings such as font size, line spacing and colours. Please note that this currently applies to on the WordPress component of the site and not to the genealogical database.

2) Use of Artificial Intelligence

I use ChatGPT in four main ways:

a) To provide initial drafts of pen portraits based on individual data in the East Jersey Bound database. I then edit and enrich these drafts with other knowledge from my research and familiarity with the contents of the database.

b) To generate illustrative images of people and scenes from the late 17th century. This is because there is a very limited pool of original and relevant paintings and engravings, especially for people who did not have elite status. I aim to refine how well these AI images evoke the period.

c) To check the clarity of guidance (for example, instructions for using the database) and of definitions (for instance, in the glossaries).

d) To help resolve technical issues in managing the website.

3) Print and PDF outputs

The is built using WordPress and Elementor which together offer great flexibility but can behave differently across browsers when rendering pages for print or PDF.

To improve consistency, I have added icons from the ‘PDF & Print’ plugin to the top of most pages, allowing you to save or print a clean copy of the content.

4) Re-use licence

Unless otherwise stated, the content of this website is covered by a Creative Commons BY-NC-SA 4.0 license (Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International).

You are free to:

i) share: to copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format (except where I have used third-party content with specific permissions)

ii) adapt: to remix, transform and build upon the material

You must observe these terms:

~ Attribution: Give appropriate credit, provide a link to the licence and indicate if changes were made. Do so in any reasonable manner, but not in a way that suggests I endorse you or your use.

~ NonCommercial: You may not use the material for commercial purposes.

~ ShareAlike: If you remix, transform, or build upon the material, you must distribute your contributions under the same licence as the original.

You may not apply legal terms or technological measures that legally restrict others from doing anything the licence permits.

5) Take-down policy

I take care to ensure that content I make available does not infringe anyone’s intellectual property rights or other relevant laws.

If you believe that any content breaches copyright laws, image licensing, confidentiality or data protection, or that it contains defamatory or sensitive material, please contact me at info@eastjerseybound.scot, providing:

1. Your contact details
2. The full details of the material
3. The exact URL where you found the material
4. If the request relates to copyright, proof that you are the rights holder (or authorised representative) and a statement that, under penalty of perjury, confirming this.
5. The reason for your request.

Upon receipt, I will acknowledge your approach and temporarily remove the content while I investigate. My conclusion may involve the permanent removal of the material concerned.
