  	It is said that he obtained the grant of land in trust for George Swan (born 1658), an illegitimate son of Charles II and Dorothea Helena, daughter of Jehan Van der Kerkhoven of Heenvliet and wife of Charles Stanley, 8th Earl of Derby. He was nursed by the wife of George Swan, a Gunner in Windsor, who was Bartholomew Gibson's sister. Swan subsequently brought the child to Edinburgh to be under Gibson's care. The daughter of the adopted George was later to write a memoir, 'The Life of Mrs. Robertson, Grand-Daughter of Charles II, written by herself'.

  Bartholomew Gibson had a son "who went beyind seas'. On 6 Apr 1771 there was an advertisement in the Caledonian Mercury seeking the heir at law or any other relation who "may hear something to his advantage'. Interested parties were invited to apply to Robert Barclay, Esq of Ury, Anthony Barclay, W.S., Paterson's Court, Edinburgh, or Joseph Sherwood, Attorney at Law, Warnford-court, Throgmorton Street, London.
