• Notes

  There may have been two Covenanter rebels called John Arbuckle, as one was sentenced to banishment on 10 December 1685, to be transported by merchant Alexander Fearne to the American plantations aboard a ship captained by Edward Barnes. John Arbuckle was being held in the Canongate Tolbooth. See RPCS XI, pp254-255, 384-387
