- The affair began when Thomas Fullarton wrote to his brother John informing him of the death of David Stewart who had died in Barbados leaving a "considerable fortwne" in land and money. John Fullarton brought John Stewart, a shoemaker in Bounetoune forward as David Stewart's heir, but this person's claim was subsequently challenged by John Stewart, Servitor to the Earl of Southesk on grounds of a closer relationship.
